After 23 years of laughter, swinging, sun & fun the Seal Beach Pier playground (affectionately referred to as the Tot Lot) is being remodeled. With a budget of approximately $200,000 the beachfront playground will enjoy a much needed overhaul after serving local families faithfully since it was built in 1993.
According to Seal Beach Recreation Manager, Tim Kelsey, outdoor playgrounds such as the Tot Lot have a life span of 10-15 years though this one lasted much longer. He explained that the demolition of the existing structure began September 6th and only took about two hours. Tim estimates the construction should be finished by September 30th.
R.E. Schultz, the General Contractor for the project expects the installation of the new playground structure to begin the week of September 19th. Following the installation of the new play structure and swings will be the rubberized surface that will cover about 75% of the playgrounds surface (see image below). NOTE - The updated plan includes four swings.
A new feature that will be welcomed by all is the two new shade canopies. Originally envisioned as a larger shade structure covering the entire playground, Tim noted that the final decision seeks to strike a balance between sun & shade.
It is with much anticipation that my family (and surely many others) await the completion of the new Seal Beach Tot Lot. Under the present and future supervision of Tim Kelsey, we're confident that the new play area will entertain families well into the future!
